SUBJECT: Beyond the Palms: Art opening at Memorial University’s Queen Elizabeth II Library
DATE: Jan. 14
The First Space Art Gallery in the Queen Elizabeth II Library at Memorial University is featuring selected works by photographer and Memorial employee and alumni Dustin Silvey.
The exhibit, Beyond the Palms, is a graphic depiction of the slums of Kingston, Jamaica, that explores life beyond the resorts and tourism ads. Inspired by a friendship formed at Memorial with Jamaican student Machel Rayner, Mr. Silvey depicts a place of poverty and violence but also of resilience and hope.
“I jumped fences, I went to all the places where it said, ‘Don’t go’…because then I am not getting the pictures everybody else has,” said Mr. Silvey. “I am getting something completely different and you have to be willing to go where others won’t.”
The opening event takes place on Friday, Jan. 16, from 6-7:30 p.m. on the main floor of the Queen Elizabeth II Library on the St. John’s campus. The event is free and refreshments will be served.
First Space Gallery has shown work by emerging artists since 2004 and continues its commitment to foster creative expression that celebrates Memorial’s dynamic campus and its thriving surrounding community.
