SUBJECT: Memorial announces architectural contract for Battery facility

DATE: Dec. 18

Memorial University has contracted architectural design services for the next phase of the redevelopment of the Battery facility to DIALOG in association with LAT49 Architecture Inc.

This team will produce the detailed architectural drawings to be used in the renovation of the Battery facility’s office tower and public engagement/conference space.

The work of the consulting team will build on the conceptual vision of the facility, and be guided by the discussion during the provincewide consultation process this past spring. The existing office and conference spaces will be transformed into a public engagement hub that will benefit both the university and the provincial community. Memorial’s Facilities Management team is overseeing graduate student residence space renovations, which are currently underway.

“Memorial has a bold and progressive vision for this facility and to ensure we achieve that vision, planning for the use of the space has been very thorough,” said Dr. Gary Kachanoski, president and vice-chancellor. “I am excited to have the architects for this next phase in place to facilitate the project moving forward.”

Consultations concluded this past June, which included dozens of stakeholder sessions, public sessions in St. John’s, Corner Brook and Happy Valley-Goose Bay, as well as an online discussion forum. Feedback received during the consultation process was positive and yielded a number of suggestions, including ideas for the facility to be a showcase and portal into the university’s activities and recommendations to incorporate visual and performing arts, as well as suggestions to mitigate potential transportation and parking issues. The full report can be viewed at www.mun.ca/battery.

“We want this facility to be relevant to the people of the entire province and to be a bridge between the university and the community,” said Dr. Rob Greenwood, executive director of public engagement at Memorial. “The consultation process gave us a forum to share our vision for the facility and generate ideas for how to make the most of this opportunity.”

Further updates on the Battery facility redevelopment project will be available at www.mun.ca/battery as they become available.
