REF NO.: 90

SUBJECT: Memorial University to hold Dec. 6 vigil

DATE: Dec. 4

Students, staff and faculty will pause and reflect during a special ceremony on Memorial University’s St. John’s campus on Saturday, Dec. 6.

Each year, the university commemorates the tragic anniversary of the 1989 Montreal Massacre. Fourteen women were killed because of their gender at l’Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal, Que. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the tragedy, which coincides with the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada.

The vigil will be held in the Engineering building, EN-2006, and will begin at 3:30 p.m. A small reception in the main foyer will follow. Free parking is available in area 60 located beneath the Earth Sciences building.

This year’s event will include a candlelight procession of 14 Memorial University students who will each represent the lives of the women who were lost.

Kim Kelly, School of Social Work, will emcee the event. Dr. Greg Naterer, dean, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, will speak and guest speaker Sarah Shannon, a fourth-year mechanical engineering student and Memorial University’s students’ union engineering representative, will give a keynote address.

Dedications will be offered by students, staff, faculty members and community organizations; the Suncor Quartet, a string quartet comprised of students from the School of Music master’s program, will perform. Representatives from community organizations across the city have been invited to attend, and there will be booths and tables highlighting their work toward ending violence against women on display.

The vigil is organized annually by Memorial’s Sexual Harassment Office and Department of Gender Studies.
