SUBJECT: Students Compete In Marine Institute Model Boat Race

Students from the Newfoundland and Labrador Eastern School District will test their ship design and construction skills when they compete in the 3rd Annual Model Boat Race at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland on Saturday, Oct. 25.
The competition takes place at the Marine Institute’s flume tank, and the media and general public are invited to attend.
Ten teams from 9 high schools will demonstrate their skills in building an operational ship model, applying physics and mathematical principles, and competitively race their vessel in the Institute's flume tank.
Teams will design and build their own original vessel hull and rudder. Teams are also required to provide calculation sheets, a design booklet and a poster board display, introducing their team and explaining their vessel design.
The competition takes place from 8:40 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Marine Institute flume tank. The awards ceremonies begin at 4:15 p.m. in Hampton Hall.
Schools taking part in the event include Ascension Collegiate, Baltimore School Complex, Carbonear Collegiate, Crescent Collegiate, Clarenville High School, Holy Trinity High School, MacDonald Drive Junior High School, O’Donel High School, and Queen Elizabeth Regional High School.
The competition is supported by the Department of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development.
