SUBJECT: Oilscapes: Visual Arts and the Materiality of Oil

DATE: Sept. 19

Interested in debates on energy, the environment and the arts?

On Wednesday, Sept. 24, Dr. Janet Stewart, director, Centre for Visual Arts and Cultures at Durham University, will speak on “OilScapes” – looking at the connections between oil, geopolitics and visual culture with particular emphasis on human mobility and the natural environment.

Dr. Steward’s current research project, Curating Europe’s Oil, explores the role that oil plays in 21st-century cultural memory. It acknowledges and builds upon critical approaches drawn from a variety of interrelated fields, including critical theory, energetics, sociology, film studies, visual culture studies and museum studies, and draws together case study materials from these fields with a focus on works deriving from Europe.

Her lecture, Oilscapes: Visual Arts and the Materiality of Oil, takes place on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 4 p.m. in room 1049 of the Arts and Administration building on Memorial University’s St. John’s campus. All are welcome to attend.

This lecture is sponsored by the Department of English and supported by the Vice-President (Academic)’s Fund for Scholarship in the Arts.
