SUBJECT: Memorial University historian among those being honoured for contributions to Jewish education in the province

Dr. Gerhard Bassler, professor emeritus in Memorial University’s Department of History, is among four people being honoured by the Hebrew Congregation of Newfoundland and Labrador for outstanding contributions to Jewish Education in the province. Dr. Bassler will be recognized for developing and teaching Memorial University's first specialized Holocaust course, Holocaust in Historical Perspective. The other honorees are Ernest J. Condon, Keith Samuelson, and Joseph Coffey.
The public is invited to the Holocaust Memorial Service, Sunday evening, April 25, at 8 p.m., at Prince of Wales Collegiate on Paton Street in St. John's where
Dr. Bassler and the others will be honoured. In addition, Frank Diamant, a guest speaker, will give a presentation titled The New Anti-Semitism and Echoes of the Holocaust. Mr. Diamant is executive vice-president of B'nai Brith Canada and head of its Institute for International Affairs and League of Human Rights. He is publisher of The Jewish Tribune, Canada's largest Anglo-Jewish publication. Refreshments will follow the service.
