SUBJECT: Rare vintage will raise funds for scholarships at Memorial University

DATE: March 26

Two bottles of 1982 Chateau Mouton Rothschild will be the focus of a unique fundraiser for Memorial University on April 7. Edmund de Rothschild, an honorary degree recipient of Memorial, donated the wine to Lt.-Gov. Edward Roberts to use for Memorial's benefit.

"In 2003, when I was chairman of the Board of Regents at Memorial, I had the opportunity to meet Edmund de Rothschild at the reopening of our Harlow campus in England." Lt.-Gov. Roberts explained. "At a subsequent luncheon, he generously offered us two bottles from his reserves and when I discussed the idea with Dr. Axel Meisen, Memorial's president, we agreed that the two bottles should be dedicated to the Harlow Trust Bursary Fund."

On Wednesday, April 7, Memorial University will be hosting this unique evening reception in the Reception Hall of the Johnson Geo Centre at 8 p.m. An entertaining evening will be presented showcasing Memorial's European Campus - Harlow, which supports the university's efforts to provide more students an educational experience in Europe.

Memorial acquired its international campus at Harlow, England, in the 1960s and since that time students from a broad range of faculties have traveled there to complete credit courses, internships, work terms, etc. The campus is also available as a base for faculty members and graduate students conducting research or further study in the UK.

"The Harlow campus affords our students and faculty the opportunity to study and work in Britain, broadening their horizons and educational experience," Dr. Meisen said. "By purchasing the $125 ticket to come to the event, each person is contributing to the Harlow Bursary Fund which provides much needed financial assistance for student travel. And they are also buying a chance to wine this exceptional wine - each bottle of which is valued at $1,200."

Tickets to the reception may be purchased through Alumni Affairs and Development by calling 709-737-4354 or by e-mail at Please note that tickets can be purchased in advance only. Payment may be made by Visa, Mastercard or cheque to Memorial University.
