SUBJECT: Speaking of Engineering lecturer to discuss enhanced oil recovery

DATE: March 5

Dr. Lesley James, an assistant professor of engineering at Memorial University and the Chevron Chair in Petroleum Engineering, will present on how to engineer the art of enhanced oil recovery on Thursday, March 7, as part of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science’s Speaking of Engineering Lecture Series.
This lecture will entice and challenge you to comprehend and investigate the complex engineering challenge of extracting more oil from our reservoirs through enhanced oil recovery. Is it art or science? Who is really best equipped to optimize recovery from our oil fields – mathematicians, chemists, geologists, computer scientists, engineers or artists?
Dr. James’s presentation will describe the basics of oil production, enhanced oil recovery and the multidisciplinary nature of the challenges that need to be solved in order to meet the world’s demand for oil. She’ll talk about how perspective is everything and in the eye of the beholder and how the answer may be different depending on the focal length of your lens. From microscopic to high-powered binoculars, she’ll talk about how scale plays an important role in interpreting the correct result.
This Speaking of Engineering Lecture Series, hosted by the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University and the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador, will be held on Thursday, March 7, at 7:30 p.m., in the S. J. Carew (Engineering) building’s Angus Bruneau Engineering Lecture Theatre, room EN-2006, on Memorial’s St. John’s campus. Admission is free. Parking is available in lot 16. All are welcome. Reception will follow.
