SUBJECT: Week of business excellence concludes

DATE: March 2

Note to editors:

The halls of Memorial's business school will seem a little emptier as students from the Network of International Business Schools (NIBS) case competition depart for home. During the week of Feb. 22-27, student teams from around the world applied their analytical, decision-making and communication skills to present strategic choices and detailed plans of action to resolve global business cases.

The competition concluded on Friday, Feb. 27, as team Memorial and team Concordia advanced from the semi-finals to the final match. The standings for the match were announced at the final banquet and awards gala held at the Delta Hotel, St. John's.

Fernanco Estigoy Jr., Isabel Chan, Anne-Marie Dancause, and Gianna Ricciardi of team Concordia emerged as the first place winners of the 2004 NIBS case competition. In addition to being the champions, the John Molson School of Business at Concordia also received the Team Spirit Award for the competition and the opportunity to host the 2005 NIBS case competition. More information on competition standings and awards can be found at

"We're really honoured that we got to compete against a team as good as Concordia," said Memorial team member Tom Dunne. "They did a tremendous job and really deserved to win. This competition has been a learning experience that will add value to our lives and education forever. In the end we're all going home as winners."

"It's been an incredible week - not just in terms of the competition but also in camaraderie," said Carol King, NIBS 2004 host committee chair. "This competition demonstrated the ability of people from all over the world to come together in the spirit of teamwork, professionalism and friendship. As one of the participants put it: great weeks are few and far between. You experience a few great weeks in a decade but this has certainly been one of the greatest of them all."

NIBS was established in 1993 to bring together business schools from around the world who believe the globalization of the economy is essential to the evolution of managerial practices. The goal of the competition is to promote cross-cultural awareness and give students an opportunity to explore international business issues. Memorial has participated in the competition since 1996 and Memorial teams have won four times: 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2003.

More than 100 people from the local business community were involved in the competition as organizers, volunteers, sponsors and judges.
