SUBJECT: Event preps students for life after Memorial University

DATE: March 12

A unique event – known as Grad Street Festival – will take over the third floor of the University Centre on Wednesday, March 14, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in The Landing, UC-3018.
With the end of another academic year is just around the corner, thousands of students are gearing up to graduate. While preparing to write their final exams next month, they’re also starting to concentrate on landing a job.
With that, Memorial is handing students a road map for the future, helping to guide graduates in the right direction.
A series of booths will be set up, providing students with information about things such as how to register for convocation ceremonies, receive tickets and how to rent a cap and gown.
Students will also get the scoop on careers after graduation, discover the benefits of becoming one of Memorial’s alumni and be able to explore graduate programs. They’ll also learn more about diploma framing, class rings, souvenirs and student loan debt reduction.
The event is based on the concept of “a road to your future,” with each stop along the way containing specific information.
“Directional road signage will direct students along the road in a progressive path as they complete the steps necessary to graduate,” said festival co-ordinator Jessica Fisher of the Division of Marketing and Communications. “The festival atmosphere will be accentuated with entertainment and prizes during lunch. The purpose of the event is to get students in the know and up-to-date on all information relevant to becoming a graduate.”
Marketing and Communications is collaborating with a number of units and departments to organize the event for its fifth year, including Alumni Affairs and Development, the Office of the Registrar, the Centre for Development and Experiential Learning, the School of Graduate Studies, the Marine Institute, the School of Social Work, the International Advising Office, the University Bookstore and Student Financial Services.
“This event is important because it ensures students are completing the necessary steps to becoming a graduate,” said Ms. Fisher. “They are able to meet face-to-face with the Memorial staff that make all these things happen.”
