SUBJECT: Plans move ahead on Memorial University's Inco Innovation Centre

DATE: Oct. 29

Memorial University is moving ahead with the construction plans for the Inco Innovation Centre, a centre of research and innovation to be built on Memorial's St. John's campus. The centre will address the scientific, technical and human resource needs of the Voisey's Bay project and will focus education and research in mining, exploration, metallurgical processing techniques as well as other innovative activities more broadly. Inco will spend $10 million on the facility and provide operating support of $1 million per year for 10 years.

"We are pleased to see this important project proceeding smoothly" said Dr. Axel Meisen, president of Memorial. "This study is a critical first step in the process of turning the Thomson Centre into a centre of innovation, creativity and research which will provide benefits to the whole university."

John Hearn Contemporary Architecture Inc. has been engaged to conduct a functional space planning study for the proposed centre. This study will incorporate all aspects of facilities planning and functional space analysis for the renovation and redevelopment of the former Thomson Student Centre. "The consultant will conduct a flexible analysis of the space requirements for the potential utilization of the space, and will provide preliminary layout plans indicating the possible layouts of all spaces within the facility," said Darrell Miles, director of Memorial's Department of Facilities Management. "As well, we will expect the consultant to provide us with a project cost estimate."

Upon completion of the functional space planning study, a request for proposals will be issued to consultants for the execution of the detailed design work for all construction and renovations required for the establishment of the centre. Tender drawings and specifications will be prepared and a tender issued for the construction of the work. The construction of the centre is expected to be completed by 2004.
