SUBJECT: Unveiling of new technology to improve offshore training and safety

            The Marine Institute will be the first institution in the world to use innovative new simulation equipment that improves the safety of lifeboat training. The equipment, called SurvivalQuest, will be unveiled to media on Friday, Feb. 25, at a news conference at the Southside Marine Base, Marine Institute. Virtual Marine Technology is transferring the SurvivalQuest equipment to Memorial University’s Marine Institute.
             SurvivalQuest was developed by Virtual Marine Technology (VMT) in conjunction with an R&D team led by Dr. Brian Veitch, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and Antonio Simoes Re of the National Research Council Institute of Ocean Technology. Funding for the project came from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), the provincial department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development and Petroleum Research Atlantic Canada (PRAC).
            Dr. Christopher Loomis, vice-president (research), Memorial University, along with Senator Elizabeth Marshall, representing ACOA, and Capt. Anthony Patterson, of Virtual Marine Technology, will be on hand for the event.
