SUBJECT: Memorial’s Board of Regents appoints new dean of business

The Board of Regents has approved Dr. Wilfred Zerbe as the dean of Memorial’s Faculty of Business Administration. Dr. Zerbe, who is currently associate professor and special advisor to the dean for accreditation in the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary, will begin his term on Jan. 1, 2010.
Dr. Zerbe holds a PhD in commerce and business administration from the University of British Columbia. He has served as associate dean (MBA program), associate dean (executive education) and associate dean (planning and development) at the Haskayne School of Business. He has also taught extensively internationally, most recently as visiting professor with the École Supérieure des Sciences Économiques et Commerciales (ESSEC) Business School in France.
“The educational and research programs of the Faculty of Business play a key role in contributing to the economic development of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador and in supporting the province’s traditional roles as a source of natural resources and as the gateway between the new and old worlds,” said Dr. Zerbe. “I am excited to be joining Memorial University and working with the academic and non-academic staff of the Faculty of Business Administration, the leadership of the university and our partners in government and industry to continue the growth and development of the faculty as a leading Canadian and international business school.”
Dr. Zerbe’s research focuses on emotions in the workplace, ethical decision-making, and employee motivation and satisfaction. He has taught at undergraduate, graduate and executive levels, and has extensive experience in university governance and process improvement. Dr. Zerbe also serves as a
consultant to public and private organizations in the areas of leadership
development, team building, communication, conflict resolution and change management.
Memorial’s Faculty of Business Administration is recognized as a leader in Canadian business education, offering innovative programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including bachelor of commerce, bachelor of business administration, master of business administration, executive MBA (petroleum), master of employment relations and PhD degrees. Graduates of the faculty occupy positions of leadership in the private and public sectors provincially, nationally and internationally and its undergraduate and graduate students boast the best case competition record among Canadian universities. The faculty is also home to the Gardiner Centre, which provides executive education, management development and business solutions to client organizations and individuals.
Research contributions by members of the faculty to top business journals rank first among universities in Atlantic Canada. In 2008-09, Memorial University was awarded more than $90 million in research funding, helping its scholars develop innovative solutions and technologies in a variety of disciplines, including business. In particular, Memorial’s research priorities and activities are helping to strengthen Newfoundland and Labrador’s position as an emerging leader in meeting Canadian and global energy needs.
