SUBJECT: Inaugural Gorman Cup Summer Business Case Competition underway

DATE: July 23

In the hot days of summer it can be tough to keep students’ minds on balance sheets and marketing tactics, but 18 ambitious undergraduate students have signed on to participate in the inaugural Gorman Cup Summer Business Case Competition this weekend.
The students have been given a business case to solve and they have 48 hours to submit a report outlining their analysis and recommendations. A judging panel will review the submissions and the top three teams will proceed to the final round on Saturday, July 25. During the final round the teams will present their findings and take questions from the judges.
The champions will be announced during an awards banquet at Bitters Pub. First prize is $700, with $400 for second and $200 for third.
The competition is named after Dr. Gary Gorman, who will be stepping down as dean of the Faculty of Business on July 31, 2009. “During his tenure as dean, Dr. Gorman was very supportive of case competitions. He often travelled with the teams, found financial support for their travel and assisted with coaching,” explained Dr. Tim Jones, professor and competition organizer.
“We hope this internal competition will encourage new business students to participate in such competitions and help prepare them for national and international competitions.”
The Faculty of Business has a long history of success in competitions at the undergraduate and graduate level. In 2009, business students have brought home one bronze, three silver and seven first place finishes in various regional, national and international competitions.
Media representatives are invited to attend the final presentations at 4:00 p.m. in Room 3007 of the Faculty of Business Administration building, or the awards ceremony at Bitters Pub in Field Hall. The awards will be presented at approximately 7:30 p.m.
