SUBJECT: Celebrate Memorial events to include celebrities and community groups

DATE: Oct. 8

Alan Doyle of the band Great Big Sea, a Memorial alumnus, is just one of the local celebrities who will be lacing up his basketball sneakers next week to help celebrate Memorial University's involvement in the community. Celebrate Memorial 2003 is a two-week set of events and celebrations aimed at heightening awareness of Memorial's community support role.

Celebrate Memorial 2003 kicked off this morning at 8 a.m. with a breakfast event in the main dining hall of R. Gushue Hall on the St. John's campus. Memorial president Dr. Axel Meisen and Dr. Lilly Walker, dean of Student Affairs and Services and chair of Celebrate Memorial, addressed the gathering of residence students and guests, giving them the latest details of the two-week schedule of events and inviting them to participate.

Basketball Challenge

Mr. Doyle, along with well known sports reporters and other personalities, will be playing against members of Memorial's varsity teams in the Celebrity Basketball Challenge on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at The Works sports facility on the St. John's campus. Helping them in the endeavor will be sports journalists Mark Dwyer, Don Power and Jonathon Crowe; Memorial University vice-presidents Evan Simpson and Glenn Collins; student union president Les McFadden; and politician Ed Byrne, among others.

The Celebrity Basketball Challenge is part of Celebrate Memorial 2003, an annual two-week festival that reflects Memorial's many connections to the community. The games are set to begin at 4:30 p.m., with the main event scheduled for 6 p.m. Donations to the campus food bank will be collected at the event.

Community Service Day

In addition to the names of the personalities recruited for the Celebrity Basketball Challenge, Memorial's seven community partners in the Community Service Day event (which is happening Saturday. Oct. 25) were also announced at the breakfast: the East Coast Trail Association; Day Break Parent Child Centre; Ocean Net; Grand Concourse Authority; the Seniors Resource Centre; St. John's Clean and Beautiful; and Cabot Habitat for Humanity. Memorial students, faculty and staff are invited to help out these community organizations by participating in projects from green space clean-ups to seniors activities.

As well, the brand-new news and events Web site known as MUN Today ( was launched at this morning's event. The site will contain all the Celebrate Memorial events, but will continue to exist beyond the two-week festivities and will be useful to anyone wanting to know about what's happening at Memorial.

With lectures, awards ceremonies, concerts and public events at both the St. John's and the Grenfell College campuses, Celebrate Memorial is designed to appeal to a wide range of people and interests. Many of the events are open to members of the university community and to the public. A full schedule of events is available at
