SUBJECT: Lecture series Music, Media and Culture continues on Oct. 16 at Memorial University

DATE: Oct. 7

Memorial University Music, Media and Culture lecture series continues on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, with a lecture by Professor David Lidov of York University. Prof. Lidov's lecture is titled What is Abstract Music Abstracted From and What is its Claim on Prestige? and begins at 7:30 p.m. in room MU-1032, located in the Music Building on Memorial's St. John's campus. Parking is available in area 15, located east of the Music Building.

Prof. Lidov studied composition at Columbia University, principally with Otto Leuning. He immigrated to Canada in 1966, and he has taught at York University since 1970. In the 1970s, his investigation of linguistic models for music theory lead him to research in general semiotics and to the theories proposed in his book, Elements of Semiotics (1999, St. Martins Press). A number of his publications in musical semiotics, dealing with problems of structure, reference and style, have been collected in Is Language a Music? (Indiana University Press). The last chapter of that book discusses his own piano suite, Voice Mail, which he will be performing during his visit to Memorial University.
