SUBJECT: Harris Centre to review Churchill Falls contract

DATE: Dec. 1

The controversial Churchill Falls hydro-electricity contract will be the topic at a public forum on Wednesday, Dec. 3. Memorial University’s Harris Centre is holding a public forum on the much debated contract where Dr. James Feehan of the Department of Economics will examine how this contract came about, and what its likely consequences will be, even beyond the contract’s end date of 2041.
Not long after the signing of this long-term contract, it was perceived by many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians as extraordinarily unfair; practically all the benefits were seen as going to the province of Quebec, with little gain for this province, the owner of the resource. Various provincial governments have protested, complained, taken legal action, called for federal government intervention, and sought re-negotiation. None of these efforts has resulted in changes to the contract.
At the forum, Dr. Feehan will explain the history of events that has put Churchill Falls on its current path, and look ahead to identify the likely future outcomes.
The forum takes place at 7:30 pm in the lecture theatre of the Inco Innovation Centre (IIC2001), Memorial University, St. John’s campus. Admission is free and registration is not required. Parking is available free in Lot 18, between the Queen Elizabeth II Library and Prince Philip Drive. A reception will follow.
