SUBJECT: Deputy Minister Brian Maynard to Deliver Oil and Gas Lecture at Memorial

The Oil and Gas Development Partnership Lecture Series continues at Memorial University on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, with a lecture titled The Newfoundland and Labrador/Nova Scotia Offshore Boundary Dispute. Given by Brian Maynard, deputy minister, Department of Mines and Energy, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the lecture will provide an overview of the dispute, the case presented by Newfoundland and Labrador and the tribunal's final decision. Mr. Maynard will also address the importance of this decision for Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia. The lecture starts at 5 p.m. in the Engineering Lecture Theatre (EN-2006) located off the main lobby of the S. J. Carew (Engineering) Building. Media agencies are encouraged to send representatives.
Mr. Maynard graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a bachelor of commerce degree in 1983 and obtained the designation of Chartered Accountant in 1985. He began his career in government in 1983 as an auditor with the Department of the Auditor General. Commencing in 1988, he was a part of the provincial government team responsible for negotiating the royalty and tax regime with respect to the Hibernia Development Project. He also served as director of the Hibernia Project Monitoring Committee in Executive Council from 1991 to 1996. In 1996, he was appointed director, Petroleum Projects Monitoring with the Department of Mines and Energy.
In July 1998, Mr. Maynard was appointed assistant deputy minister of the Energy Branch with the Department of Mines and Energy, a position he held until his appointment on Jan. 1, 1999, to the position of deputy minister of Mines and Energy. In addition to his governmental position, Mr. Maynard also serves on the board of directors of the Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro Corporation and the Bull Arm Site Corporation.
Initiated in September 2001, the Oil and Gas Development Partnership Lecture Series brings together industry, academia, government and the community, providing information on new developments, issues, technologies and trends that directly affect the future of the east coast industry.
