SUBJECT: Memorial University group promotes going green to get active

DATE: May 16

Members of the Memorial community looking to get active just before summer all the while doing something good for the environment are in luck.
The spring launch of BikeShare is set for Tuesday, May 20.
The concept is simple: participants borrow a well-maintained bicycle – donated by the greater community – to use for as little as a week or as long as semester.
The aim is to get more faculty, staff and students using pedal bikes instead of motorized vehicles.
The campaign is co-ordinated by MUN Project Green in partnership with the Atlantic Canada Chapter of the Sierra Club.
Membership is only $15, part of which is returned at the end of the semester. Participants can also volunteer three hours with Project Green instead of paying the fee.
“We are extremely excited about the official launch of the MUN BikeShare Program with our partners,” said Jessica Dawe, a MUN Project Green member and a recent Arts graduate. “Bicycling holds multiple benefits not only in promoting active living and a healthy lifestyle, but in reducing our impact on the planet.”
The spring launch of BikeShare takes place Tuesday, May 20, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A registration table will be set up on the third floor of the University Centre on the St. John's campus. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, May 21, a public workshop on bike repair and safety will take place in UC-2001 from 12-1 p.m.
More information about BikeShare is available on the MUN Project Green website,
