SUBJECT: Memorial University to attract American students into online Bachelor of Nursing Program

DATE: Aug. 4

Memorial University's international reputation for excellence in distance education was enhanced today through a partnership with American Learning Solutions to attract students to the online Bachelor of Nursing Program (Post RN).

The agreement formalizes the recruitment of students into Memorial's Bachelor of Nursing (Post RN) Program over a multi-year period. Beginning with the January 2004 class, American Learning Solutions, an American e-learning company, will attract new students from the United States for Memorial's online Bachelor of Nursing program. Over the life of the agreement over 500 US-based nurses may become Memorial students.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for us to expand our nursing student population and provide nurses participating in this program with cross-border sharing of how nursing and health services are offered," said Dr. Carole Orchard, director of Memorial's School of Nursing. "This agreement will enhance our program by opening new opportunities to US students and providing more course offerings each semester for our existing domestic students. The partnership will allow Memorial University to expand its offerings creating opportunities for local students as well as US students."

Students who enter the program will take all courses through online learning at Memorial University. They will be able to stay at home, interact with local students online and complete the Bachelor of Nursing (Post RN) program. Ann Marie Vaughan, Memorial's director of Distance Education, noted that "this opportunity clearly recognizes the strength of Memorial University in distance education as a whole and the strength of our nursing program in particular. Distance education is a great way for nurses and other professionals to further their education at a time and place convenient to their busy work lives," she said. "We are pleased that American Learning Solutions has recognized our capability in this area and we welcome the new students who will connect with us as a result."

Dr. Richard Oliver, president of American Learning Solutions, noted that in the US, about 60 per cent of practicing registered nurses do not have a Bachelor of Nursing degree. "The need for a program to allow nurses to earn a degree and maintain full-time employment led us to search for a partner with online leadership and a track record for quality and efficiency. Memorial University is the obvious choice," he said.

Memorial University has been offering distance education to nursing professionals for twenty years. In 1998, the School of Nursing expanded its undergraduate offerings to an online Bachelor of Nursing (Post RN) program. The School also offers a graduate degree in nursing by distance.
