SUBJECT: Executive Director for Memorial's Oil and Gas Development Partnership Appointed

DATE: Sept. 30

Officials from Memorial University today announced the appointment of Gerrit Maureau as the executive director of the Oil and Gas Development Partnership at the NOIA natural gas forum in St. John's, Newfoundland.

"Mr. Maureau's appointment is very timely," said Memorial University President Dr. Axel Meisen. "Production, construction and exploration off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador are continuing at a rapid pace and the university's Oil and Gas Development Partnership is fully launched. We are on track to become a world-class leader in research, training, and education for the offshore petroleum industry."

"I am delighted to have been invited to Memorial University to undertake the co-ordination of the Oil and Gas Development Partnership," Mr. Maureau said of his appointment. "Like the programs we intend to offer, the oil and gas partnership will combine the best elements of academia, government and industry. The oil and gas initiative was formulated in response to industry's needs and we have a great opportunity to develop the kind of international relationships that will put Memorial firmly in the forefront of education, research and development in oil and gas studies."

Mr. Maureau comes to Memorial with over thirty-five years of international exploration and production experience at technical, managerial and executive levels. His experience working in industry began in 1966 with Shell International Petroleum where he worked in the R&D Seismic Processing Centre interpreting seismic data and developing software for seismic mapping and interpretation, and continued in early 1979, when he joined Petro-Canada as a senior regional exploration manager, Atlantic Region. Under Mr. Maureau's direction, Petro-Canada made world-class hydrocarbon discoveries on the Scotian Shelf and offshore Newfoundland. Mr. Maureau then went on to become vice-president (international) with Encor Energy Corporation where he developed significant exploration programs which resulted in the discovery of large oil and gas reserves.

In 1988, Mr. Maureau founded his own company, MaurOil International Inc., and has been working as an independent oil and gas resource management consultant specializing in international exploration and production activities since that time. He is also the author of a course titled Managing Oil and Gas Assets: Decision Making Under Uncertainty which looks at the fundamentals of geologic, volumetric and economic/political risk analysis. With his unique combination of industry experience, Mr. Maureau will be a valuable addition to Memorial University's Oil and Gas Development Partnership. His three year term at Memorial begins this month.

The Oil and Gas Development Partnership (OGDP) was launched by Memorial University President Dr. Axel Meisen in September 2000 to help transform Newfoundland and Labrador into an internationally recognized leader in education, training, research and development related to all facets of the oil and gas industry with emphasis on offshore production in ice-prone waters. Since its inception, the OGDP has recruited new faculty members and researchers, created new programs related to oil and gas studies, launched a public lecture series devoted to new trends and developments in the industry and built heavily upon its research infrastructure.
