SUBJECT: Memorial University's St. John's campus to host award-winning camp for whiz-kids

DATE: June 25

On Sunday, June 29, 50 high-achieving high school students from across Canada will be arriving at Memorial's St. John's campus for the ultimate summer learning experience. From June 29-July 25, Memorial will be hosting the internationally-acclaimed Shad Valley program for the first time.

Since 1981, the award-winning Shad Valley program has been providing outstanding senior high school students with a chance to learn about the disciplines that will give them an edge in the competitive, knowledge-based world.

"We are very excited about delivering the Shad Valley program," said Bonnie Simmons, associate director, P.J. Gardiner Institute for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship. "Shad is Canada's premier program in science, technology, and entrepreneurship and we're looking forward to working with such a talented, energetic group of young people."

A typical weekday at Shad consists of lectures, group work, sports, and leisure. The weekends involve group outings such as camping, hiking and boat tours.

"Our main focus for Shad Memorial this year is to offer a uniquely Newfoundland and Labrador four-week experience that will stimulate and challenge these students," said Ms. Simmons. "Participants will have a chance to interact with some of our institution's top instructors and challenge their abilities to think creatively. They will also be challenging their physical abilities by exploring sites like Signal Hill, Cape Spear, and Gros Morne National Park."

The Shad Memorial program is being co-ordinated by the P.J. Gardiner Institute for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship at the Faculty of Business Administration. Memorial is one of 10 campuses across the country to host the Shad Valley program. Newfoundland student Jason Gedge, of Fairbanks, is one of the 50 participants in this innovative program.

Over the past 23 years, the Shad Valley program has proven to be a life-changing experience for senior high school students interested in pushing their intellectual and creative capacity to the limit. Unique among summer programs for youth, Shad Valley follows a co-op model, offering a four-week university based academic portion, followed by a challenging work-term for approximately half of the participants. Shad is industry driven with over 200 companies and organizations supporting the program.
