SUBJECT: Grenfell - Sir Wilfred Grenfell College student awarded Canada Millennium Scholarship

DATE: Oct. 24

A Grenfell College student has been awarded an Excellence Award from the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation.
Dan Monafu, a historical studies student at Memorial University’s Corner Brook campus, received a second-level award of $4,000 annually for two years.
In 1998, the Canadian government established the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation. The Foundation's Millennium Excellence Award Program rewards and supports students who demonstrate community engagement, leadership and innovation as well as academic achievement.
“I am honoured to be a recipient of the Millennium Excellence Award,” he said. “I hope this award serves as an encouragement for others like me to passionately pursue their beliefs with dedication and commitment. I would like to thank my professors at Grenfell for their excellent teaching and guidance.”
In addition to being a top-notch student, Mr. Monafu has demonstrated these qualities through his involvement in activities on and off campus as well as through student leadership. He is this year’s History Society president, as well as the Grenfell College Student Union’s Vice-President Academic. He has also worked with the Registrar’s Office to deliver tours to prospective students.
Mr. Monafu founded the Grenfell College Criterion Collection Club, which provides students with an opportunity to view influential works of cinema by world-renowned directors. He also founded the Grenfell Christian Fellowship. The group has become a place that welcomes all denominations and religions, and has fostered diversity as well as unity.
In the larger arena of Corner Brook, Mr. Monafu has volunteered for Operation Christmas Child, the Corner Brook Food Drive and was involved as an actor for a Theatre Newfoundland Labrador Youth Theatre Fundraiser. His involvement with the international artisans and crafts initiative Ten Thousand Villages meant he was able to bolster the group’s volunteer force during its annual sale in Corner Brook.
As part of the award, Mr. Monafu is also eligible for ancillary programs. For example, the foundation has invited him to participate in an all-expenses-paid conference in Fredericton, N.B., for the Millennium Regional Laureates meeting Oct. 26-28.
“I think I can speak on behalf of the historical studies unit that this award is well deserved and Dan deserves our highest commendation,” said Dr. Rainer Baehre, chair of the historical studies program at Grenfell College.
