SUBJECT: Demand for Marine Pursuits Camps Growing

DATE: June 2

Building a cardboard boat, witnessing helicopter emergency evacuation manoeuvres and taking the wheel of a simulated Navy frigate are just some of the activities high school students will get a chance to experience at Marine Pursuits - a camp program offered by the Marine Institute this summer.

Launched with great success last year, Marine Pursuits gives students in grades 9, 10, and 11, the opportunity to explore various career opportunities available in the marine and related fields. During the one-week residential camps, students get hands-on with learning activities in the field, in the lab and through demonstrations in nautical science, marine engineering, naval architecture, marine systems design, food technology, marine environmental technology, coastal zone management, and aquaculture. Last year, over 60 students from across the province took part in Marine Pursuits.

Three camps will take place at the Marine Institute's campus in St. John's on July 14-18, July 28 - August 1, and August 11-15.

"Getting the get the word out about the many marine career options that are open to high school students today is one of the reasons for creating Marine Pursuits," says Robyn Saunders, Marine Institute's camp coordinator. "It's also a chance for young people with similar interests to meet and have fun learning about the science of our oceans."

Already applications are pouring in as the deadline of June 20 approaches. Demand for the camps is expected to surpass that of last year.
