SUBJECT: Memorial University celebrates MUNdays 2007

DATE: Oct. 15

Nearly 50 events spread over five days on two campuses and countless ways to celebrate.
That’s how organizers are hyping this month’s annual fall celebrations at Memorial University of Newfoundland, scheduled for Oct. 23-27.
I Love MUNdays take place on the St. John’s campus, while I Fell for Grenfell rolls out at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in Corner Brook.
The aim of both events is to encourage the university community to celebrate the diversity, ingenuity, excellence, kindness and community spirit that make Memorial shine above the rest.
Organizers are putting the final touches on a medley of activities and events and want to get as many students, staff and faculty members, and pensioners into the thick of celebrations this year.
In St. John’s, things kick off on Tuesday, Oct. 23, with a Parade of Flags through campus; a Health Circus, where participants will try everything from belly dancing to juggling; and a basketball challenge between the Women’s Sea-Hawks team and local celebrities.
At Grenfell, a Health Bodies/Healthy Minds event, organized by Western Regional School of Nursing, is scheduled for Day One. The Grenfell community is invited to come out and see how fit they are.
“I Love MUNdays is a very special program designed especially for all members of the Memorial community to celebrate how fantastic our university is,” said Jessica Clarke, MUNdays co-ordinator of the St. John’s campus program. “We have compiled an impressive basket of huge prizes that will be won or given out throughout the week of events. I encourage everyone to get involved in MUNdays.”
One of the main events scheduled for I Love MUNdays is the Rant Like Rick finals where one lucky student will walk away with $1,000 for the best rant. Eleven finalists will take part in a special event on Oct. 24, with the top three winners being awarded $1,000, $750, and $500, respectively.
The videos for the finalists are available online at: and voting is now underway for the favourite rant.
Other events taking place in St. John’s include: the 26th annual Alumni Tribute Awards are set for Oct. 25; Kindness Friday, set for Oct. 26 where members of the university community can roll up their sleeves and do something nice for others. Units and departments are being encouraged to register what they are doing online at to inspire others.
And, finally, the fifth annual Barnes House Charity Truck Pull is set for Oct. 27.
Meanwhile, at Grenfell College there’ll be opportunities to learn about global warming, lace up sneakers for the Campus Dash, take in the sights and sounds of International Night, “Pie the Prof” at the GCSU Food Court, and bring Teddy in for a check up at the nursing school’s teddy bear clinic.
“We’re even sending a student representative from Grenfell College to take on the other university ranters during the Rant like Rick contest on the St. John’s campus,” said Beth MacNeil, co-ordinator of I Fell for Grenfell.
“We’re so pleased to offer a wide selection of activities for both the Grenfell community and the public, and also to bridge the province and celebrate in tandem with our St. John’s counterparts.”
