SUBJECT: Business grad learns that "You're never too old to learn"

DATE: May 28

Dorothy Stacey would like her children to get a good education and pursue their dreams. In 1999, Dorothy decided to take her own advice and enroll in Memorial's bachelor of commerce (co-operative) program. On May 29, Dorothy will graduate with her degree, something she came to value.

"I knew I needed a degree," she said. "I needed that piece of paper to be able to advance in my career. I chose Memorial's co-op program for the networking opportunities it presented." As part of her program, Dorothy worked with Aliant, Newfoundland Power and with the Department of Human Resources at Memorial. "I had some wonderful experiences on my work-term and was assigned some very challenging projects. Co-op also allowed me to make some valuable contacts in the business community."

But Dorothy didn't focus entirely on learning about the local business community. She also participated in the Faculty of Business Administration's exchange program and spent a semester in Harlow, England. "At first, I didn't give much thought to leaving my two children; however, it was my kids and my husband who encouraged me to go," she explained. "Harlow was a once in a lifetime chance. It gave me an opportunity to travel through Europe, visit with my sister and learn about international business."

"I also learned a lot about myself; I quickly realized I wasn't 21 anymore. Dormitory living took some getting used to, but I really appreciated being included in my classmates' plans," she said. "They often brought different perspectives to discussions and their youth and enthusiasm were refreshing. Together we all learned that everyone has a contribution to make if we take the time to listen."

The support of her family and her own stubbornness helped Dorothy earn her degree. "I like to learn, I'm up for a challenge and I believe each new day brings a different set of challenges and opportunities."

A self-described optimist, she was a little nervous about getting back into the classroom.

"At first, I was afraid I didn't have enough brains to do this," she admits. Her confidence began to grow after she received her first set of marks. "I was really excited when I saw my marks and I realized I guess I do know what I'm talking about. " Her advice to anyone who's been out of school for a while and has considered going back is to go for it. "You're never too old to learn."
