SUBJECT: Memorial University student finds fame studying music

DATE: May 27

You may remember her as Miss Teen Newfoundland and Labrador, an OZ-FM cruiser girl, or perhaps as a character from one of many dinner theatre performances. Now, the winner of reality television show, Popstars: The One, Christa Borden is most often recognized as Canada's Chosen One. On May 28, Ms. Borden will graduate from Memorial University with a bachelor of music, specializing in vocal performance.

"Along with family and friends, university life helped me to become a very well-rounded person," Ms. Borden said. "Memorial's safe atmosphere and my love for the music program allowed me to develop a confidence and openness which ultimately led to me trying out for Popstars."

Ms. Borden further credits a large part of her success to university professors, in particular, Dr. Carolyn Schiller, her voice professor for the past four years. "Dr. Schiller was very encouraging both inside and outside the university," said Ms. Borden. "She always kept me confident with words of praise during stressful times."

Ms. Borden also acknowledged her accompanist Leslee Heys, who she identified as major part of her support system.

To Ms. Borden, her degree from Memorial is not just another piece of paper. It is a symbol of her hard work and dedication to the field of music and to herself as a performer.

"My degree gives me a kind of legitimacy," Ms. Borden said. "I write and perform songs at my piano, I understand the classical forms of music and the etiquette of performance. I know how to breathe right and take care of my voice. I don't get nervous performing in front of crowds anymore. These are all products, at least in part, of my time at Memorial University."

Academics aside, Christa Borden believes in keeping her days full. She loves teaching music to children, spending time with family and friends, writing songs, and believes strongly in her role as a volunteer with the Newfoundland and Labrador Lung Association, promoting the awareness of lung disease. She believes in making every minute count, and her time at Memorial was no exception. "It's a great university with everything you could possibly want at your fingertips," Ms. Borden said. "Whatever you want you just have to look for."
