SUBJECT: Memorial University to continue to offer the learning vacation experience

DATE: May 21

The learning vacation is back. Last year's successful venture by Memorial's Faculty of Education, titled Between a Rock and a Great Place, will return July 20-26. The learning vacation was designed to offer a learning experience that is fun, while at the same time challenging. A discussion of how Newfoundland is represented through popular media is also a central element of the event.

The mornings consist of presentations and discussions around daily themes related to Newfoundland and Labrador with titles such as A Sense of Place, A Historical View and Weathering it All. Afternoon tours and activities include visits to archaeological digs, ecological reserves, pub crawls and kitchen parties, to name just a few.

The idea originated with Dr. Roberta Hammett and Dr. Alice Collins in the Faculty of Education. They enlisted the help of Mike Coady, Bernadette Power, Dr. Clar Doyle and Dr. Andrea Rose in the faculty.

Last year's event included a walking tour of St. John's, tea at the Crypt in the Anglican Cathedral, breakfast at Cape Spear, the Ocean Sciences Centre, the haunted hike, a harbour boat ride on the Lauzier, the Marine Institute research vessel, a kitchen party at The Big R, a pub crawl, a screech-in, toutons, and a day in Brigus. Lecturers included many faculty from Memorial University including Dr. Lloyd Brown speaking on dialect, Dr. Phil Hiscock on folklore, Dr. Shane O'Dea on architecture and Dr. Wilf Nicholls on flora.

The group organizing this venture is being assisted by the P. J. Gardiner Institute. "We appreciate the business knowledge they bring to our enterprise," said Dr. Alice Collins, dean of Education. "We would be pleased to develop more partnerships at Memorial University. There is a depth of knowledge and experience that can enrich our learning vacation program through collaboration with other academic units."
