SUBJECT: Memorial University's faculty of Business Administration toasts local business excellence with two awards

DATE: April 7

The Faculty of Business Administration has taken stock of candidates for its two most prestigious distinctions and is toasting business excellence by presenting an accountant and the owners of a local winery with its Alumni Honour Award and its Newfoundland and Labrador Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

At the 19th Annual Partners Dinner to be held April 10th, the faculty will award Gail Hamilton its 2002 Alumni Honour Award. Ms. Hamilton, B.Comm. (Co-op) (Honours) '77, is a senior assurance partner with Ernst & Young LLP. Dr. Hilary and Ms. Marie-France Rodrigues, owners of Markland Winery, will receive the 2003 Newfoundland and Labrador Entrepreneur of the Year Award from the faculty's P.J. Gardiner Institute.

"Ms. Hamilton and the Rodrigues' are terrific examples of the style of leadership we value in our students and graduates," said Dr. Gary Gorman, dean of the Faculty of Business Administration. "Each award winner has achieved excellence in their chosen field and they each demonstrate a commitment to supporting the Newfoundland and Labrador economy and their local communities."

"This award is very special to me," said Ms. Hamilton. "I was part of the first graduating bachelor of commerce (co-operative) class at Memorial. One of the things we learned as students was the importance of interacting with the business community. As an alumna, I also believe staying connected to the university after graduation is important. Alumni play an important role in guiding and shaping our future business leaders. I am honoured to be recognized for my contributions to the university and to the business community."

Already owners of a successful winery, the Rodrigues' are expanding to produce innovative products including nutraceuticals, juices and cosmetic products. "We are most grateful for this kind award," said Ms. Rodrigues. "Our driving force is to put Newfoundland and Labrador on the map by producing great wellness products. We are proud to be located here and we are dedicated to bringing new technologies to the food and beverage sector."

The awards will be presented at the faculty's 19th Annual Partners Dinner to be held at the Fairmont Newfoundland on April 10. For tickets please contact Roma Bowen at 737-2182 or before April 7.
