SUBJECT: Memorial University to hold spring convocation from May 24-26, 2006

More than 2,000 degrees will be awarded at Memorial University’s annual spring convocation at the St. John’s Arts and Culture Centre. There will be eight sessions of convocation from May 24-26, 2006.
Outstanding individuals from the worlds of business, public life, the arts and sports will be awarded honorary degrees during the convocation ceremonies.
The honorary graduands include: Holocaust survivor Philip Riteman; historian Dr. Robert Gellately; author and academic Dr. Roland Le Huenen; choir leader Sister Kathrine Bellamy; nursing practitioner Kay Matthews; businessman Gary Bruce; public servant and businessman Roland Martin; Olympic gold medal curling winners Team Gushue, made up of Brad Gushue, Mark Nichols, Jamie Korab, Mike Adam, Russ Howard and coach Toby McDonald; and public servant Dr. Alex Himelfarb.
Dr. Neil Rosenberg, retired professor of folklore, will be presented as professor emeritus on Friday, May 26, during the 7:30 p.m. session of convocation.
Meanwhile, Irish poet Paul Muldoon was recognized with an honorary doctor of letters at the Sir Wilfred Grenfell College convocation held on May 12, 2006, in Corner Brook. 
During fall convocation 2006, slated for Oct. 20 in St. John’s, honorary degrees will be awarded to author and historian Ingeborg Marshall; author and biographer Anne Hart and Dr. Alison Feder, the first Newfoundland woman to hold a doctorate and an academic position at Memorial University
Memorial’s president, Dr. Axel Meisen, will deliver his report to convocation during the 10 a.m. session of convocation on Friday, May 26.
