SUBJECT: Memorial leads the pack at prestigious John Molson MBA International Case Competition

DATE: Jan. 4

When the John Molson MBA International Case Competition at Concordia University opened yesterday, Memorial University of Newfoundland had already earned the distinction of being the most successful school in the competition’s history. However, Memorial’s 2006 team hopes they’ll be taking home more than that when the competition wraps up on Saturday.

Having earned the most first place finishes and accolades than any other school, Memorial’s teams have led the pack in many of the past competitions. Most notably, Memorial has taken home the Concordia Cup four times (1988, 1990, 1991 and 1996) and last year Memorial became the first Canadian school to be awarded the Richard Outcault Team Spirit Award.

Memorial’s 2006 team, comprised of MBA students George Colbert, Jeffrey Keats, Michael Pickard, Brian King, and Quentin Coish (alternate) and coaches Peggy Coady and Dr. Alex Faseruk, is in Montreal this week to defend the school’s reputation for being a fierce yet friendly competitor.

“The competition combines the highest quality of competitiveness, friendliness and professionalism rolled together. Often our rivals are our friends, such as Laval,” said Dr. Faseruk. For 20 years, he has helped prepare Memorial’s MBA students for this event and is the longest serving coach at the competition. “The most important aspect of the competition is to have universities come together to meet and greet one another from around the world.”

“The Concordia Case Competition is the most challenging yet rewarding experience that an MBA student can become involved with during their academic program,” said Ms Coady, who was a member of Memorial’s 1996 winning team. “The skills that you acquire during the preparation and participation in the event are invaluable. The experience is so rewarding that it encourages former team members to stay involved with the process either in a coaching or judging capacity.”

Some of Memorial’s achievements at the John Molson MBA International Case Competition include:

  • Most championships in the competition (1988, 1990, 1992 and 1996)
  • Most medals won (second place in 1989 and 1995; third place in 1986, 1992 and 1993)
  • First and only all-female team to have won the competition (1991)
  • Only Canadian winner of the Richard Outcault Spirit Award (2005)
  • Longest serving and most successful coach (Dr. Alex Faseruk)
  • Most matches won
