SUBJECT: Dec. 6 vigil change in agenda

Note to Editors

 

The agenda for the Dec. 6 vigil taking place at Memorial University tomorrow has been changed.

Sarah Stoodley, parliamentary secretary to the minister, Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, and MHA for Mount Scio, will attend the vigil on behalf of Premier Dwight Ball and bring greetings on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.  

Other speakers remain the same and include Dr. Noreen Golfman, provost and vice-president (academic), as the emcee and Dr. Greg Naterer, dean, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, who will offer welcoming remarks.

Kimberly Orren, project manager and founding director, Fishing for Success Program, will give the keynote address and Sean Kennedy, School of Graduate Studies and the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures, will honour the memory of the 14 women who were killed because of their gender at l'École Polytechnique in Montréal, Que., on Dec. 6, 1989, by reading their names aloud.

Following the vigil the St. John’s Status of Women Council will hold a purple tree lighting in the lobby of the Engineering building to honour the murdered and missing women and girls of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Dec. 6 Vigil will begin at 6 p.m. in the Engineering building’s main lecture theatre, EN-2006.
