SUBJECT: World Oceans Day celebrations at Middle Cove Beach

The Department of Ocean Sciences, Faculty of Science, will celebrate World Oceans Day 2019 at Middle Cove Beach, on Friday, June 7.
 
Grade 5 students from Roncalli Elementary and St. Francis of Assisi have been invited to the beach to learn about the importance of the ocean in our own backyard, ways to protect this fascinating underwater world and our impacts on the ocean, particularly relating to marine debris and invasive species.
 
Activities for the day include a beach cleanup, learning about local marine life through an interactive touch tank and interacting with Memorial University researchers, staff, students, and scientific divers, as well as representatives from partner organizations including the Oceans Learning Partnership, Town of Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove, the Aquatic Invasive Species unit, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Parks Canada and Zero Waste Canada.
 
The event will begin at 9:10 a.m. at Middle Cove Beach.
