DATE: March 28, 2019

Note to Editors

The Memorial Centre for Entrepreneurship (MCE) will host a business idea competition that invests $35,000 in student entrepreneurs on March 28 at the Emera Innovation Exchange, Signal Hill Campus.

The 2019 Mel Woodward Cup provides prizes of $10,000 each to up to three teams of students for their innovative business ideas. Winning teams will also receive in-kind prizes related to legal, marketing, tax and professional development services from supporters such as Genesis, KMPG, Altitude Media, Gardiner Centre, Perfect Day, Cox & Palmer and the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Technology Industries (NATI).

Honourable mention prizes of $3,000 and $2,000 will also be awarded.

The competition will be held from 6-9 p.m., during which time eight teams will present their business ideas and be evaluated by a panel of judges from the business community. The winning teams are expected to be announced at 8:30 p.m. Members of the media are invited to attend.

The Memorial Centre for Entrepreneurship, based in St. John’s, aims to inspire and enable aspiring entrepreneurs. It provides inspiration, guidance, resources and an entrepreneurial community to undergraduate and graduate students at Memorial University.

The Mel Woodward Cup was created through a donation to the Faculty of Business Administration in 2017 from the family of the late Dr. Mel Woodward, a well-known entrepreneur who founded the Woodward Group of Companies. The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency also provided support for the competition, as well as other entrepreneurship-focused initiatives by MCE
