SUBJECT: Marine Institute to host 11 schools competing in Model Boat Race

DATE: November 29, 2018

Note to editors

Model boats designed and built by youth from Conne River, the Bonavista Peninsula and the Avalon Peninsula will race in the Marine Institute’s flume tank on Saturday, Dec. 1, as part of the seventh annual Model Boat Race.

The event takes place from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Marine Institute’s Ridge Road campus in St. John’s. Media are welcome to attend.

More than 100 students will compete using remote-controlled miniature vessels of their own design and construction. In the morning, teams will navigate their boats through a slalom course of buoys; in the afternoon, they’ll race head-to-head around the flume tank for the title of fastest boat.

Participating schools include Ascension Collegiate, Brookside Intermediate, Carbonear Collegiate, Clarenville High, Crescent Collegiate, Fatima Academy, Gonzaga High, Heritage Collegiate, St. Anne’s High, Roncalli Central High and Riverside Elementary.

The Model Boat Race is co-ordinated by the Marine Institute’s School of Maritime Studies and the Office of Student Recruitment. This year’s event is supported by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, Fleetway Inc. and SNC Lavalin.
