SUBJECT: High schools to participate in Marine Institute's annual Model Boat Race this weekend

DATE: April 26, 2018

Nine Avalon Peninsula high schools will participate in the Marine Institute’s annual Model Boat Race scheduled for Saturday, April 28.

The event takes place between 8 a.m.-4 p.m. in the flume tank at the Marine Institute’s Ridge Road campus in St. John’s.

Taking into consideration marine design components, each team worked together to build a remote-controlled, operational model ship to competitively race in the flume tank. On Saturday morning, the teams will navigate their boats through a slalom course of buoys. In the afternoon, they will race their boats head-to-head for the title of fastest boat.

Members of the media are welcome to attend.

Participating high schools are Ascension Collegiate, Brookside Intermediate, Clarenville High, Crescent Collegiate, Fatima Academy, Queen Elizabeth Regional High, Roncalli Central High, St. Mark’s School and Stella Maris Academy.

The Model Boat Race is co-hosted by the Marine Institute’s Office of Student Recruitment and the School of Maritime Studies. It is supported by Fleetway Inc., Genoa Design International and SNC Lavalin.
