SUBJECT: PSA: Public lecture on Curating for Change: Festivals, Improvisation and the Staging of Diversity

The International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation (IICSI) will host a public lecture at Memorial University on the subject Curating for Change: Festivals, Improvisation and Staging Diversity. The lecture will explore how arts festivals can be active forces for creating positive social change in their communities.
Dr. Ajay Heble, project director of IICSI and founding artistic director of the internationally acclaimed Guelph Jazz Festival, is the keynote speaker.
His talk is part of a one-day symposium Curating for Change: Transforming N.L. Communities Through Arts Festivals that brings together representatives from 13 arts festivals across Newfoundland and Labrador to hold a series of dialogues about their experiences, challenges, opportunities and visions for their communities.
Dr. Heble will speak on Friday, April 28, from 1-2 p.m. in the MMaP Gallery on the second floor of the Arts and Culture Centre in St. John’s. Admission is free. The presentation will also be live-streamed on the Music at Memorial YouTube channel.
The IICSI is a partnered research institute at six universities in Canada and the United States, including Memorial University. Funded by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Partnership Grant, it was recently awarded the prestigious 2016 Impact Award from SSHRC. IICSI-MUN is co-ordinated by Dr. Ellen Waterman and housed in Memorial’s School of Music.
