SUBJECT: PSA: P is for Picture Book

DATE: May 18, 2016

A new exhibition, P is for Picture Book: Imagination through Illustration, is now on display at the Queen Elizabeth II Library on Memorial University’s St. John’s campus.

The exhibit features highlights from the Peattie Picture Book Collection—a collection of more than 3,000 titles of prominent children’s book authors, illustrators and designers collected by Dr. Roger Peattie, an alumnus and recipient of a honorary doctor of laws degree from Memorial University, and professor emeritus at the University of Calgary.

Some gems in this collection include a first edition of A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh (1926) and Randolph Caldecott’s toy books (1885-1887), as well as works by renowned illustrators Maurice Sendak, Kate Greenaway and Walter Crane.

The exhibit is curated by Jeannie Bail, acting special collections librarian, Archives and Special Collections Division, QEII Library. Other collaborators include Dr. Roger Peattie; Dr. Helene Staveley, Department of English; Beth Maddigan, education librarian, Faculty of Education; and Susan Prior, children’s librarian, Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries.

P is for Picture Book is located on both the second and third floors of the QEII Library and runs May 15-June 30 and July 5-Aug. 15 at the A.C. Hunter Public Library in the Arts and Culture Centre in St. John’s.
