SUBJECT: PSA; Memorial University presents Dialogue on Knowledge and Democracy

There is pervasive and growing unease in many sectors in Canada about our institutional capacity to produce the knowledge required to sustain a healthy democracy and to provide the foundation for sound policies and practices.
Such ability is essential if we are to respond to the profound local and global challenges of the 21st century.
Sponsored by the Royal Society of Canada, CBC Radio’s Ideas and Memorial’s Office of Public Engagement, the Dialogue on Knowledge and Democracy is designed to contribute to a larger and more sustained discussion on these issues in the province and nationally over the coming months.

7 p.m. – Screening of Hands On: Women, climate, change (2014) – Co-sponsored by Cinema Politica St. John’s, discussants include Drs. Mark Stoddart and Max Liboiron, Department of Sociology
Wednesday, Oct. 7
6:45-7 p.m. – Slide presentation of Fogo and Change Islands Encyclopedia of Local Knowledge, by visual artist and Memorial's Office of Public Engagement post-doctoral fellow Pam Hall
7-9 p.m. – Science and Democracy: The New Synthesis. Public lecture by Dr. Harry Collins, Distinguished Research Professor and director, Centre for the Study of Knowledge, Expertise and Science at Cardiff University. Moderated by Paul Kennedy, host of CBC Radio’s Ideas. Reception to follow.
Thursday, Oct. 8
12-1 p.m. – Music showcase and dialogue on music and democracy featuring Iranian musician Hadi Milanloo, American musicologist Daniel Hawkins and violinist Carole Bestvater. Moderated by Dr. Chris Tonelli. Location: D.F. Cook Recital Hall, School of Music
7-9 p.m. – A Mature Modernity: Science and Skepticism in Democratic Societies. Public lecture by Dr. Sheila Jasanoff, Pforzheimer Professor of Science and Technology Studies, Kennedy School of Harvard University. Moderated by Paul Kennedy, host of CBC Radio’s Ideas. Reception to follow.
All evening events will take place in IIC-2001 in the Bruneau Centre for Research and Innovation. Parking available in lot 15B.
