DATE: June 6, 2016

Note to editors:

Memorial University will celebrate World Oceans Day at Middle Cove Beach on Wednesday, June 8, with children from local elementary schools.

World Oceans Day is a global day of celebration and collaboration for a better future. This year’s theme is Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet. Organizations and individuals around the world are promoting the prevention of plastic ocean pollution with events in their communities.

The event at Middle Cove Beach with students from Roncalli and Vanier elementary schools is hosted by the Department of Ocean Sciences, in partnership with the departments of Sociology and Geography and the Environmental Sciences program, along with the Oceans Learning Partnership, Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium, Town of Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Activities will include a beach cleanup, interactive touch tank and fish viewing containers and interactions with Memorial researchers, staff and students, scientific divers and representatives from partner organizations to learn about the importance of the ocean in our own backyard, our impacts on our oceans and ways for us to protect this wonderful and fascinating resource.
