SUBJECT: 2016 graduation ceremony to be held at Fisheries and Marine Institute

DATE: June 16, 2016

Note to editors:

Almost 200 graduates will receive diplomas and certificates during the 2016 graduation ceremony at the Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University on Friday, June 17.

The event will take place in the gymnasium of Marine Institute’s Ridge Road campus at 2 p.m.

The ceremony will include remarks from Glenn Blackwood, vice-president, Memorial University (Marine Institute), and student speaker Will Glatt, who is graduating from the institute’s remotely operated vehicles technician diploma program.

A new interactive website honouring the HMS Calypso will also be previewed in honour of the 100th anniversary of Newfoundland's contribution to the Battle of the Somme during World War One. The site has been designed by representatives of MI to recognize the vessel and the maritime contribution of Newfoundland and Labrador in the First World War. The site will provide visitors with an opportunity to discover more about the Royal Newfoundland Naval Reserve and the ship on which they trained.

At Memorial’s spring 2016 convocation ceremonies at the St. John’s Arts and Culture Centre May 31-June 3, 110 bachelor’s and 37 master’s degrees were presented to Marine Institute graduates.

As part of MI’s graduation celebration activities, students, friends and family are invited to share their graduation congratulations, photos and special moments via social

media using the hashtag #MIGrad16. You can join the celebration by adding @marineinstitute on Twitter, following marine.institute on Instagram and liking the Marine Institute page on Facebook.
