2014-2015

News Release

REF NO.: 11

SUBJECT: Annual Food 'n' Garden Fair at Memorial University Botanical Garden

DATE: September 12, 2014

To “grow” upon the success of last year’s inaugural event, Memorial’s Botanical Garden and its dedicated partners invite the public to the second Annual Food ’n’ Garden Fair.

Featuring new chefs and returning favourites, this year is set to be bigger and better.

Guests at the garden can expect multiple demonstrations, displays and tips on gardening, growing vegetables, herbs and composting; a kids’ component, including vegetable creature creations, newspaper planters and various other activities; a unique food-tasting experience where local chefs will serve up their culinary creations using ingredients provided by local farmers; and the Annual Potato Peeling Contest – for kids and adults!

In addition to recognizing 2014 as the International Year of the Family Farm, the Food ’n’ Garden Fair will continue to honour Ken Proudfoot’s legacy as a research scientist, potato breeder, avid gardener and a Friends of the Garden member.

The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Memorial University Botanical Garden, 306 Mount Scio Rd., St. John’s.

Admission to the garden is free for the day; however, donations to the garden, as well as non-perishable food items for the Community Food Sharing Association, will be gratefully accepted.

Food-tasting tickets are $20 and will include tasting samples from four chefs between 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on the day of the event.

To partake of the food-tasting experience, visitors are encouraged to purchase tasting tickets in-person at the garden prior to the event date. Please check back to our website at www.mun.ca/botgarden for further information on featured chefs and menus.

Special thanks to our generous sponsors – the City of St John’s, Memorial University, Downhome Magazine and the Telegram – without whom this event could not be such a grand success.
