SUBJECT: Technical briefing of fisheries policy report

Members of the media are invited to a technical briefing of the policy report Moving Forward – Building Economically, Socially and Ecologically Resilient Fisheries and Coastal Communities.
The briefing will be held by the lead author of the report and principal investigator of the Community-University Research for Recovery Alliance (CURRA), Dr. Barbara Neis, Faculty of Arts, Department of Sociology, Memorial University.
The policy report, written by Dr. Neis, Dr. Rosemary Ommer, University of Victoria, and artist Pam Hall, is the outcome of a 2012 International Symposium of Rebuilding Collapsed Fisheries and Threatened Communities held in Bonne Bay, N.L., and was prepared under the guidance of an advisory committee of key stakeholders.
The release of the report marks the completion of the CURRA project, a seven-year (2007-14) innovative and interdisciplinary research program based primarily on communities along Newfoundland's west coast and focused on developing strategies to aid in the recovery of fish stocks and coastal communities across the province.
Based on seven years of intensive research, Moving Forward refutes the popular notion that provincial fisheries and coastal communities are broken, rather that there are many strengths to build upon and the need to shift the focus from downsizing to revitalizing the industry and the communities that rely upon it. The report suggests 22 recommendations, both short and long term, to build upon these strengths and begin to revitalize the fishery.

The report will be publicly released at the Harris Centre’s upcoming Memorial Presents event on Wednesday evening. At the event, Dr. Neis will be joined by Craig Pollett, CEO of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, and Earle McCurdy, president of the Fish, Food and Allied Workers.
Memorial Presents will take place on Wednesday, April 16, at 7:30 p.m. in IIC-2001, Bruneau Centre for Research and Innovation, on Memorial University’s St. John’s campus.
