2013-2014

News Release

REF NO.: 34

SUBJECT: MUNdays is a party and a half at Memorial University

DATE: October 21, 2013

Day 5 of Memorial University’s annual fall celebrations, I ♥ MUNdays, promises to pack a punch.
Today, Monday, Oct. 21, wear your pride with some MUN-branded clothing. It’s MUNday, all day! The MUN Bookstore is offering a 20 per cent discount until Oct. 22 so everyone can nab something new and spirit-friendly.
At 3 p.m., a shiny new event, the Three Minute Thesis Challenge, will kick off at The Landing in the University Centre. Graduate students have three minutes on the clock to present a compelling and concise oration on their thesis to a live audience. A judging panel will award the top prize of $1,000.
At 6 p.m., you’re invited to help Memorial shine the spotlight on some of its remarkable graduates during the 32nd Alumni Tribute Awards at the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland. There'll be tributes to Brendan John Paddick, Alumnus of the Year; Eleanor Anne Swanson, J.D. Eaton Award for Service to Memorial University; Randy James Murphy, Outstanding Community Service Award; and Francis (Frank) Perry Durnford, Horizon Award for Exceptional Achievement under the age of 35. Tickets can be purchased online at reunion.mun.ca.
At the Marine Institute, it’s MI Clothing Day. All students, staff and faculty are encouraged to wear MI clothes today and show off MI pride.
You don't have any MI clothing? No problem. The MI Bookstore is offering 10 per cent off all MI branded clothing until Oct. 22. Get there early for the best selection.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 22, the university-wide Health Challenge is on. This year, the Wonderbolt Circus will perform. The spirit of the circus will get everyone’s energy flowing at the Field House from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. In 2012 the Memorial University community walked a total of 4,796 laps around the Field House track and shattered the 2011 record. Let’s do it again this year!
With its 50th anniversary is just around the corner, MI is celebrating tomorrow by creating a time capsule to be buried on campus in 2014. There is nothing that creates a link with the past quite like an item you can hold in your hands, knowing that the last time somebody held it was 50 or a 100 years ago.
You’re invited to place an item in our time capsule. Bring your item to the barbecue lunch from 12-2 p.m. and place it in our time capsule with your name, hometown and program name.
I ♥ Grenfell runs from Oct. 23-27. For more see http://www.swgc.mun.ca/love-grenfell/Pages/default.aspx.
