SUBJECT: Memorial University highlighting emergency preparedness with Disaster Chef Challenge, half-day fair

Memorial University has challenged its faculty, staff and students to call on their culinary skills to create an original recipe using only non-perishable food items and a camp stove in the pursuit of emergency preparedness.
The Disaster Chef Challenge is part of an Emergency Preparedness Fair taking place in The Landing, University Centre, St. John’s campus, on Friday, May 16.
The Disaster Chef Challenge gets cooking with propane at 12 p.m. in the courtyard outside the University Centre; the fair runs from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
“The Disaster Chef Challenge is meant to raise awareness about personal emergency preparedness,” said Holly Tobin, emergency management analyst, Office of Emergency Management at Memorial. “It’s a fun way to engage with our campus community and teach preparedness at the same time. We’re excited to see our staff, faculty and students’ creativity shine through with the recipes.”
Three finalists will prepare their dish for a panel of judges. The Disaster Chef Challenge winner will take home prizes, including an emergency preparedness kit.
In addition to the Disaster Chef Challenge, the Emergency Preparedness Fair will feature demonstrations by some of Memorial’s emergency preparedness partners, such
as the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and its K-9 unit, and provide information about what individuals can do when an emergency strikes.
