News Release

REF NO.: 156

SUBJECT: Memorial University hosts athletes from across Canada

DATE: July 31, 2013

More than 300 of the nation’s top basketball players along with their coaches and families will soon be on the St. John’s campus. The Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association (NLBA) is hosting the National Midget Boys and Girls Championships for 15 and under from Aug. 4-10 and the majority of events will be held at Memorial.
It’s the first time in 26 years Newfoundland and Labrador has hosted the championship. Basketball stars from across the country will show their stuff as male and female teams come from every province in Canada as well as one team from the three territories.
Games and practices will be held at the Physical Education Building and The Works, as well as the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Centre. There are 21 teams and about 350 players, coaches and officials coming, all of whom will be housed in Memorial residences.
Dr. Bas Kavanagh is an associate professor at the School of Human Kinetics and Recreation. Two years ago when he was president of the NLBA it was his idea to put in a hosting bid. “This is a great opportunity for the university, Human Kinetics and Recreation (HKR), varsity athletics and for recruitment. Our basketball coaches are excited because it’s a great opportunity for them to meet prospective future varsity basketball players and it is great exposure for Memorial.”
Bill Murphy, executive director of the NLBA, says the organization could not have asked for better co-operation from Memorial University.
“Outside of the Sports Centre, MUN has the top facility in the province for an event like this. We would like to host the entire event at MUN but this was as much as scheduling would allow. Michelle Healey (director of Athletics) has been super supportive. She has gone above and beyond to support the NLBA and the event. On behalf of the NLBA, I’d like to say kudos to MUN for helping make this championship happen.”
