SUBJECT: Harris Centre brings Memorial to Labrador City

The Harris Centre at Memorial University is preparing for a trip to Labrador City. Memorial students, staff and faculty will meet with local people to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the region. The ultimate goal is to create partnerships that lead to further research and work on the ideas generated at the session.
The regional workshop, taking place on Tuesday, March 26, from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m., has been organized in collaboration with local representatives from the Labrador West Chamber of Commerce, the Labrador Institute and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.
As part of the planning process, the Harris Centre consulted with these organizations to determine specific areas of regional interest for the workshop. The three topics that were identified are social and municipal impacts of a booming economy, labour market development and fostering sustainable and resilient communities.
The morning part of the session will be dedicated to sharing the research that Memorial is currently doing in the region and what supports the university has to offer. The afternoon session will delve deeper into the three topics selected by the organizing group. Participants will break into three groups to discuss challenges and suggest possible areas for further research, teaching and engagement. It will be an opportunity for the members of the region to help shape the work that happens at Memorial, so everyone will be encouraged to share their input and ideas.
There will also be a Memorial Presents Public Forum held the evening before the workshop. Dr. John Thistle from the Labrador Institute will be presenting on Community Resiliency: Navigating the Boom and Bust Cycle in a Remote Mining Community. There will also be two local panellists. This will be held at the Arts and Culture Centre in Labrador City on Monday, March 25, from 7-9 p.m. It will include a question and answer session and be followed by a reception.
