SUBJECT: Record numbers expected for Memorial’s St. John’s campus orientation

DATE: August 31, 2012

More than 2,000 new students are expected to descend on Memorial’s St. John’s campus on Monday, Sept. 3, for its annual fall orientation.
“We redesigned our entire orientation program a few years ago, and our numbers have climbed steadily ever since,” said Amy Butt, manager of Answers. The office co-ordinates and implements orientation activities on the St. John’s campus.
“We have managed to increase the entertainment value, but still give students the information they need to start their first few weeks at Memorial,” she said. “We have some exciting new things planned. We launched student and parent webinars this year as part of our increasing pre-orientation programming and we concentrated a lot more on social media to reach the students. The level of engagement we have seen this year has us excited for our numbers on Monday.”
Dennis O’Keefe, mayor of St. John’s, will again this year join Dr. Gary Kachanoski, Memorial’s president and vice-chancellor, Dr. Rob Shea, deputy provost and associate vice-president (academic) pro-tempore and representatives from Memorial’s student union during welcoming ceremonies to welcome new students to the city and into the Memorial family.
Student Affairs and Services hosts new student orientation on the St. John’s campus, along with a concurrent orientation for parents of new students. Orientation is a high energy event which introduces new students to each other, to life at Memorial and to the programs and services available to them.
Registration begins on the St. John’s campus on Monday at 11 a.m. in the University Centre, with welcoming ceremonies beginning at 1 p.m. in the Field House.
