SUBJECT: PSA: Public lecture: Simulated Democracy: Journalism and the Academy in Post-Revolution Malawi

Memorial University’s Faculty of Arts and the Department of Philosophy present Dr. Mark Anderson speaking about his experiences with declining human rights standards in Malawi under the rule of President Bingu Wa Mutharika.
The lecture will take place 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 25, at the Ship Pub as part of the St. John’s Public Lecture Series in Philosophy.
Dr. Anderson was a faculty member at the University of Malawi from 2008 -10 and experienced first-hand infringement on the academic freedom of lecturers and students. He left Malawi and resigned his post in December 2010.
Strikes and arrests have ensued at the university and it is currently shut indefinitely.
Dr. Anderson will discuss how countries such as Canada and Britain should review their relationships with Malawi and how they can help to address the dictatorial tendencies of President Mutharika.
