SUBJECT: PSA: New Mexico guest speaker discussing doctor shortages

Health professional shortages are a concern in many communities in Canada and the United States. Joaquin Baca will be visiting the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University to speak on the challenges and solutions that New Mexico has encountered when dealing with this dilemma.
Mr. Baca’s presentation, titled Culture and Diversity, the People we Serve, is part of the faculty’s Community Health and Humanities’ seminar speaker series. All are welcome to join him on Friday, Oct. 7, 1-2 p.m. in the Health Sciences Centre lecture theatre B.
Mr. Baca is from Santa Fe, N.M., and graduated from St. John’s College with a bachelor of arts in liberal arts. He completed his premedical studies and attained a master’s of science in public health degree in 2008. More recently he worked for the Center for Native American Health and the NM Geriatric Education Center at UNM before starting at the Office of Diversity.
Mr. Baca values the role of diversity in academic health sciences and feels very connected to his work. He believes that by building a diverse healthcare workforce, it is a way of moving toward a health equity in New Mexico.
